Project descriptionThe City of Ottawa has completed design work for the structural enhancement of the Marianne Wilkinson pedestrian bridge and construction will occur between October 2021 and January 2022. The work is being conducted to install a snowguard on the bridge together with miscellaneous structural repairs in order to mitigate snow and ice falling onto the highway.

1 km west of the Eagleson Road and March Road overpass and 1.5 km east of the Terry Fox Drive overpass connecting Hearst Way and Gray Crescent over Highway 417

Traffic impacts:
In order to accommodate the proposed construction various traffic restrictions will be required depending on the stage of construction
Pedestrian traffic inside the bridge:
- The bridge will be closed to pedestrian traffic between 9 pm and 6 am.
- The bridge will be open to pedestrian traffic during the day although space may be restricted.
- Intermittent lane closures on the highway between 9 pm and 6 am. Note, at least one lane will be maintained in each direction at all times.
- Intermittent ramp closures between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am. Detours will be in place for local residents to access the highway when ramp closures are in effect
Variable message boards will be deployed to notify the public of the upcoming highway ramp / lane closures once the closure dates have been confirmed.

In October 2021, the City of Ottawa will begin the renewal of the Marianne Wilkinson Pedestrian Bridge in your neighborhood.
What: The work involves the installation of snow guards and miscellaneous structural repairs.
Why: This work is required for safety reasons, to mitigate snow and ice falling onto the highway.
Where: Highway 417 – 1 km west of the intersection of Eagleson Road and March Road to 1.5 km east of Terry fox Drive.
When: This work is planned to begin in October 2021 and be completed in January 2022.
Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, Louis W.Bray Construction Ltd, to complete the work.
Impact on the Right of Way and Adjacent Private Properties:
The reconstruction is within the City’s right of way but may result in some disruption to part of the private property directly adjacent to the work. The City will reinstate sections of landscaping, driveways and walkways that are disturbed by construction. However, if you have plants or any other assets located within the City’s right of way that you want to preserve, we suggest that you move the plants in preparation for the construction work.
Contractor Responsibility:
As part of this Contract, the Contractor is assuming full responsibility for the construction work until it is entirely complete as well as any damages to private property resulting from these construction activities. In the event of such occurrences, all claims for damages should be immediately reported both verbally and in writing to the Contractor and to the City on-site Representative. This will ensure prompt notification of appropriate authorities to complete the claim investigations.
Construction Disruptions:
The Contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but, as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as traffic delays, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation.
For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).
