It’s back to school time in Kanata South.
For those kids heading back to school, a reminder to drivers to go slow in school zones and to be mindful of the additional school buses in our neighbourhoods.
Safety is the top priority when it comes to sending our kids back to school during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has established a COVID-19 School Support Team that consists of experienced staff and 45 additional public health nurses. They will be working with schools to help address any questions or concerns from the school community and will be ensuring that all plans and practices are put in place to help with infection prevention and control.
For more information, check the Ottawa Public Health website.
Kanata South Link construction project
Work continues on the Kanata South Link (KSL) construction project. The work on Old Richmond Road from Hope Side Road to West Hunt Club Road, and West Hunt Club Road from Old Richmond Road to approximately 200 metres east of Moodie Drive is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
The widening of West Hunt Club Road, east of Moodie Drive to Highway 416 is expected to be completed in mid-2021.
Over the next few months, the following construction work can be expected:
Periodic lane closures (off peak) may be experienced over the next few months throughout the construction site, with the use of flagging personnel. One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times. Traffic lane shifts and delays can be expected.
Over the next couple of weeks, paving will be undertaken overnight to minimize the traffic impacts. A Noise By-law Exemption has been granted for this work and I have asked that any overnight work being done on Hope Side Road or on Old Richmond near houses be done during the weekends to minimize the impact on students during the week. Full details on this project can be found on my website.
GLAD Cleaning the Capital
The 27th annual GLAD Cleaning the Capital fall campaign is underway now. Community members must register their clean up projects on the City of Ottawa website by October 15th. Pick a project site, a date and make sure you have the proper tools needed to dispose of waste, recycling, or any hazardous materials.
Once registered, you’ll be able to pick up your cleanup starter kit and get to work keeping our community one of the cleanest in the city!
I want to thank all Kanata South community members taking part in this important initiative and ask that you continue to follow OPH COVID-19 guidelines while taking part.

August 2020 column
Summer vacation continues here in Kanata South, however, things are a little different this year with COVID-19 being a big part of our everyday life.
The city of Ottawa has entered Stage 3 of the reopening process, which means you can enjoy pools, playgrounds and sports fields. Many local restaurants have reopened as part of this stage as well, but if you plan on having a night out at any one of Kanata South’s many restaurants – remember to follow the Covid-19 safety guidelines and follow the recommendations set out by Ottawa Public Health. More information can be found at OttawaPublicHealth.ca.
Ward Boundary Review Update
During the last Council meeting before the summer break, we received an update on the ward boundary review. Five options were presented at the meeting on July 15, but council asked the consultants to develop a sixth option as well.
Personally, I was very disappointed with the consultant's recommendation for our area which includes making Terry Fox the new boundary instead of the current boundary of the Carp river. This option would take Walter Baker Park, the Kanata Rec Centre, the Sensplex and the entire business park including old city hall, Costco, Movati and Home Depot and move them to Stittsville. In one other option they want to move the boundary from the highway to Hazeldean Road. This would move all lands south of Hazeldean Road to Stittsville.
I will have more in this topic in my next newsletter and on my website. Starting later this month, residents will be able to provide feedback on these six options on Ottawa.ca.
Public Information Electronic Meeting- Sept. 16th
An application for rezoning has been filed with the city for the property at 33 Maple Grove, at the corner of Maple Grove and McCurdy. The zoning application would facilitate the development of two three-storey apartment buildings. Each building is planned to provide six two-bedroom units. The buildings will face McCurdy, with access to a parking area off of Maple Grove. The buildings have been designed to be consistent with the zoning requirements of the existing R1 zone.
Details of the proposed application, including a Planning Rationale prepared by Novatech and preliminary design drawings prepared by Lara McKendrick Architecture will be posted on the city’s website. A virtual community meeting is being planned for Wednesday, September 16. Details on how to attend this meeting will be available on my website shortly. www.councillorallanhubley.ca
Kanata South Link Update
Over the coming months, work will continue on the Kanata South Link project.
Along Old Richmond Road, construction of the multi-use pathway, final lift of asphalt will be paved including the roundabouts, line painting and signage installations will occur. Once the paving through the roundabouts is complete, the ultimate two-lane roundabout configuration including full activation of the PXO pedestrian crossings will be open and ready for use.
Ditching, fencing, streetlighting and landscaping work will continue along West Hunt Club Road with the final lift of asphalt expected in the fall.

April 2020 column
Spring is here but it is a little different this year, as we continue to adjust to life with COVID-19.
I want to thank residents for continuing to follow the rules and guidelines set out by the city and the province when it comes to preventing the spread.
Mental health during COVID-19
One of the most difficult parts of this pandemic is having to distance yourself from friends and family. This may take a toll on your mental health. A reminder from Ottawa Public Health that physical distancing does not mean emotional distancing, you can always check in on your loved ones by phone or other technology. You should also check in with yourself and remember that it is ok not to be ok. Everyone will experience this situation differently and help is available if you need it. The Mental Health Crisis Line (24 hours/day, 7 days/week) at 613-722-6914 (1-866-996-0991 if you are outside of Ottawa). If you or someone you know are experiencing thoughts of suicide or harming yourself, please call 9-1-1.
It is important to recognize that the COVID-19 situation is evolving very quickly. Please refer to OttawaPublicHealth.ca/Coronavirus to stay up-to-date on the latest information.
Street Sweeping
Street sweeping will continue across the ward and I wanted to give you a little more information about the process. The sweepers are using a machine which does an initial pass and picks up the heavy debris which is loaded into a dump truck via a conveyor. Once the initial pass is complete, they will come back around with a roadway sweeper that cleans up along the curb lines. Some streets are heavier than others with leaves and grit, so it may take several trucks or passes to clean up all the debris, sand and dirt that accumulated over the winter. Each street will be inspected by staff before it is approved and marked as being completed and it might take a couple of days before your street has all the debris removed.
Sidewalk and Curb Construction and Rehabilitation
The city of Ottawa has started work along McCurdy Drive North from the Dorey Park Pathway to Castlefrank Road and McCurdy Drive South from Holy Redeemer School to Castlefrank Road.
If access to your driveway is blocked due to construction, you will be required to park on the street, in legal parking spots. On-street parking permits are currently not being given out as the rules for on-street parking have been relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Accessibility is important, so if you require special accommodation, contact the Contractor’s representative or the City’s Project Manager. You can find more information at ottawa.ca/accessibleformat.
This work is expected to continue until June 2020.
Community Gardens
The province has announced that allotment gardens and community gardens will be permitted. These gardens across our city are an essential source of fresh food for many families facing food insecurity. Ottawa Public Health (OPH) will be providing advice, recommendations and instructions for the operators of these gardens. While the gardens will be allowed to operate, the standard physical distancing rules will still apply.
As a reminder, my office is open, and we are here to help. You can email me at [email protected] or call our main line 613-580-2752 and leave a message.
